WE TV whips up baking series

US cable network WE TV has commissioned two original series, including a fact-ent show following a family-run cake baking business headed by a 21-year-old pastry chef.

Staten Island Cakes (8×60′), produced by Nancy Glass Productions and exec produced by John Miller and Annabelle McDonald, launches on June 21 at 21.00. It continues a trend for cake-oriented factual-entertainment shows that has seen networks such as WE TV and TLC airing titles including Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes and DC Cupcakes.

Also new to the network is Braxton Family Values (10×60′), a doc about singer-songwriter Toni Braxton and her four sisters, which will air from April 12 in a 21.00 slot. The series is made by US prodco Magical Elves and is also exec produced by Miller and McDonald.

Elsewhere, the network has renewed Downsized – its original series about an Arizona family dealing with the effects of the recession – for a second 10-episode season.

The commissions come after the network recently rebranded and changed its tagline to ‘Life As WE Know It.’

Kim Martin, president and general manager of WE TV and Wedding Central, said: “WE TV’s programming showcases the wild ride of relationships during life’s defining moments, whether it’s the thrill of getting married, the drama of family chaos or the excitement of a second chance.

“As women, we share a connection and a sense of community based on similar life experiences and situations. It’s that particular point of view that defines ‘life as we know it.'”
